Position Title:   Academic Fellow

Reports to:       Director of Academic Success and Innovation

Status:              Part-time, Exempt                 

Academic Fellows are responsible for the implementation of site-specific initiatives related to academic success and innovation. The Academic Fellow will work directly with Clubs, schools, and community partners to evaluate and implement programming for elementary and middle school-aged youth and longitudinal academic strategies related to the transition between developmentally appropriate interventions. Academic Fellows contribute to the strategic development of academic initiatives and develop and implement programming and strategies including in-school interventions, out of school programming, and community events related to academic success.

This 18-month fellowship will support the Highland Bridge Project, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, through a collaboration between Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus, Highland Elementary School, and other school partners. The Academic Fellow will work directly with students at Highland Elementary School and the J. Ashburn, Jr. Boys & Girls Club.

Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend over 18 months. Academic Fellows have access to leadership development resources, support, and a network of individuals, experiences, and learning opportunities to maximize their impact as leaders and professionals.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Program Coordination

  • Directs and oversees academic programming in out-of-school settings (Power Hour, Reading Buddies), and in-school interventions as appropriate (literacy interventions, one-on-one tutoring, etc.)
  • Work collaboratively with school administrators, teachers and service providers to identify academic supports needed to ensure achievement of academic initiatives and individual student outcomes
  • Develop and execute strategies to enroll and retain students in academic initiative programs and as Club members
  • Liaise with school and community partners to ensure coordinated service delivery
  • Coordinate all initiative logistics including scheduling, ensuring availability of materials and supplies and transportation
  • Maintain a communications plan including timely communication of logistical and program specific information to key stakeholders
  • Support initiative volunteers and mentors in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Support Youth Engagement Specialists in the development and implementation of programs and curriculum that support grade level literacy and STEM initiatives
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices and trends in youth development programs and strategies

Community Outreach & Engagement

  • Cultivate positive relationships with key partners including schools and funding agencies
  • Support Club Directors in building and maintaining positive relationships with families, communities and partners
  • Represent BGCC at agency, school and community events and meetings
  • Serve on relevant professional committees and task forces that promote the initiative’s desired outcomes

Club Experience

  • Maintain a working environment that promotes Club member safety as a first priority.
  • Support the development and execution of strategies that ensure an optimal experience for Club members.
  • Provide all services in a culturally competent manner that is responsive to the needs of Club members.

Data Management and Quality Improvement

  • Tracks student progress by use of pre-tests, mid-year tests and post-tests
  • Maintain individualized records for Club members participating in the initiative and produce regularly scheduled reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of current Club data (Dashboards, NYOI, DESSA, etc.)
  • Employ BGCC quality improvement methodology to develop, test, and implement strategies that improve processes and achieve outcomes as it relates to the initiative.

  • Attend regularly scheduled team and individual meetings.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and shared success.
  • Provide recommendations to the Director of Academic Success and Innovation and BGCC Leadership on strategies for initiative and organization-wide improvement.
  • Develop and show continued progress through an individualized professional development plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, child development or related field preferred.
  • Experience providing youth development and/or education services for elementary school age youth.
  • Ability to work independently, with considerable self-direction, and as a contributing member of a team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented with strong project management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends as necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Must pass a criminal background screen and drug screen.
